Hetch Hetchy and the Miwoks

Not long ago in the early 1990s Yosemite Valley and all therein was prestine. Then came the greedy White Person and destroyed all that was good. One of the most devious happenings in all of histroy was the flooding of the Hetch Hetchy Valley to create a large dam. All of San Francisco and the neighboring counties get their clean drinking water from Hetch Hetchy. This valley was very sacred to the Miwoks the First People of the area. This great Sacred Valley was flooded and the people who lived there for thousands of years were sent packing off their ancestral land. Do you think this is right?

tidings: Yerba Buena and San Francisco

tidings: Yerba Buena and San Francisco

Compacts, gambling and the First People

There is fad that the White person has been fooling the Native Americans - compacts in California are arrangements where casinos can be built on Indian land. Lots of money is exchanged - card games, gambling, slot machines, and so forth. Soon drink wine, prostitution and women, other evil ways which the Native Americans never ever endorsed become the norm. Gradually, the soul dies and those that were noble are prone to evil. As the Spirit once foretold that is what will happen when we fail to respect the elements and follow simple ways.

The First People of San Francisco

Now that you all know that the First People of San Francisco are the Muwekma Ohlone you might want to know more.

Where do most of the Muwekma Ohlone live?

Most of them live around the San Jose area.

Why do they live around that area and not in San Francisco?

Well, they had to run for their lives and take assumed names because the White men were out to kill them and remove them from the face of the Earth. Soon the only safe haven they had to save their lives was around San Jose so there they remain around San Jose and have reared their families.

The Lewis and Clark trip to the West Coast

The U.S. President Jefferson was very open minded. He had met the Great Six Tribes in person and seen for himself how they organized themselves. Jefferson also had a vision that would lead other to explore the West. He saw tribes, land, and a great river. Jefferson thought a Great River ran from Coast to Coast! He sent Lewis and Clark to find out and some guides the most prominent a Native American woman who saved their lives and acted as their Chief Translator. No river flowed from coast to coast but what they saw was pristine land and lots of it. They also saw the Pacific Ocean it all its glory.
They met the great tribes of Chief Joseph and other and many of them offered their hospitality. Later more about the woman guide and good stuff...... All this happened a little over 200 years ago.

Federal Recognition and a short history of California Tribes.

300 years ago most of what we call California was pristine. The hills, the rivers, the stream, the land, the creeks, the forest were not affected by any dangerous levels of pollution.

The trees were in plenty and in the rivers lots of fish. There were herbs, berries, and lot of fruits. Lots of birds, insects, and animals like deer, bear - in short there was plenty of food. The water was clean and in abundance.

There were many tribes in California and they were all free. Free as in they could live and roam without any one bothering them.

The Vikings first visited the tribes and left. Then came the Russians and they traded with the California tribes on the West Coast of the United States. The English came and went. Then came the Spanish and they saw that they took the land for the Spanish Royalty. That was the mentality - you saw, if you liked what you saw - you took it. In other words they stole the land.

The Spanish mistreated the Native Americans. Later the Mexicans did the same. Both these cruel and uncouth entities forced the Christian Faith on the Native Tribes and in this case the Ohlone. Ohlone means the people from the West.

These folks introduced diseases which killed thousands of Native Americans.
The Native Americans died and no one really cared for them. It is the same
today - nothing much has changed.

Later the United States bought California from Mexico in exchange for some gold.
Up to 1924 anyone who was White could kill an Indian or Native American in California and for the scalp get $5 to $10. No harm would come to any White who committed a crime against any Native American.

This is a shame that will live in infamy for the rest of the lives and history of those who particiapted in this senseless behvior in all of California.

The Muwekma Ohlone and some tribes were put on the Federal Register by the Bureau of Indian Affairs that acted on behalf of the United States. Once on the United States Federal Register the tribes of California - as do the tribes all over the United States are given certain rights. Money, food, protection, and so on.

In the case of the Muwekma Ohlone an ignorant and inept Bureau of India Affairs Agent L.A. Dorrington removed the Muwekma Ohlone without any cause in 1927.

All of San Francisco and beyond belongs to the Muwekma Ohlone. The Muwekma Ohlone has Patrimonial Jurisdiction and no other tribe enjoys this right. The strangers have tried to pity one tribe against the other - as did the English, the Dutch, the Portuguese, the Germans, the Italians, the French, others all over the world.

You had greedy people go and steal the land from the First People. Do you think this is right? If the First People were wronged how would you want this wrong to be made RIGHT?

Yerba Buena and San Francisco

Lots of fun people come to San Francisco. All of San Francisco belonged to the First People and to you I will introduce them - the are the Muwekma Ohlone. Before San Francisco was named San Francisco it was called Yerba Buena - the Good Herb. Once many herbs grew wild and the First People ate them and used them to heal themselves. Once San Francisco and the Bay Area was Pristine - but now it is not. Can we find out why that happened?

The Muwekma Ohlone

All of San Francisco once belonged to the Ohlone. This land was taken away from the First People and polluted. Today, over one and half million gallons of seconday effluents enter the Bay daily - this is mostly half treated sewage. What do you feel about this injustice done to Mother Earth?

The City and County of San Francisco and the Board of Supervisors have passed several Resolutions honoring the the First People of San Francisco the Muwekma Ohlone but nothing much beyond that. Most Whites feel a guilt complex because some of them understand that up until 1924 which is not too long ago - Whites could kill a Native American and no harm could come to them. Do you think this is right?

The Governor of California passed several edicts encourgaing Whites to kill Native Americans. Young Native American children were captured and used as slaves. Others forced into Boarding School where they wer taught English and forced to forget and speak their native toungue. Do you think this is right?

Today the Muwekma Ohlone number about 500 and are doing pretty well considering the whole world was guning them down.

San Francisco and its aging infrastructure

I am sure there are many out there who care about our City - the City and County of San Francisco. I am sure there are many who are interested in our aging infrastructure and our resources. We are blessed that we have all the clean drinking water a great resource from Hetch Hetchy. We also can tap into the electricity from Hetch Hetchy. We have other sources of energy supplied by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) which believes in constant hike rates. We have a sewage system which is falling apart. Any thoughts?

Why all the high rises? Why all the development?
